CUNNINGHAM BACK IN BRIAN STEWART RACING #33 CAR AT MILWAUKEE

Former series champion Wade Cunningham was back in the #33 Brian Stewart Racing car for another one-off drive at the sixth round of this year's Firestone Indy Lights championship at Milwaukee over the weekend.

However there was not to be a repeat of his third place finish at the Firestone Freedom 100 last weekend.

The 23-year-old stepped back into the car for a third time this season on Thursday but was not able to make the gains in practice, qualifying and the race he did at Indianapolis, qualifying and running eighth early on but slipping back to 12th place at the flag.

The race was won by Cunningham's former FF2000 class sparring partner Bobby Wilson from fellow class veteran Jeff Simmons, Brazilian Raphael Matos and Andrew Prendeville.

Wilson was quickest in both practice sessions but pole went to new face Pablo Donoso who eventually finished seventh.

It was that sort of weekend with Freedom 100 winner Dillon Battustini finishing 14th, runner-up Richard Antinucci 16th and the category's top female driver Ana Beatriz 19th.

Cunningham ran competitively early on in a freight-train of cars occupying positions four-through-eight but slipped back to 12th late in the race as he lost grip in the rear.

"No excuses," the 2003 World Karting Champion said afterwards. "It was just one of those weekends where I was never really able to get the most out of the car."
